55th Lessing Days of Kamenz

At a glance

The 55th Kamenz Lessing Days in 2025 will be dedicated to the city's anniversary.

The series of events in honour of the anniversary of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's birth and death celebrates the poet every year with a varied programme of entertaining performances, lectures and readings.

In 2020, the 55th Kamenz Lessing Days will take place from 17 January to 28 June under the motto "Lessing and Kamenz". They mark the 800th anniversary of the first documentary mention of Lessing's birthplace Kamenz and will open with a reading by the Hamburg writer Wolfgang Hegewald.

17 very different events build bridges from the 18th century to the present day.
The first highlight of the series is the awarding of the Lessing Prize of the Free State of Saxony by the State Minister for Culture and Tourism Barbara Klepsch on 22 January, Lessing's birthday. The main prize will be awarded to the writer Clemens Meyer, while the sponsorship prizes will go to the writer Tina Pruschmann and the director Georg Genoux.

One day later, it will be "Lessing Prize Winners in Conversation". The prizewinner and the two prizewinners will talk to journalist Michael Hametner and present their latest publications.

On 5 February, Prof. Dirk Oschmann will present his book "Der Osten: eine westdeutsche Erfindung".

The musicologist and pianist Kolja Lessing will make a guest appearance in Kamenz on 8 February. He will play works from Joseph Haydn to Paul Czerny. A composition by Dimitri Terzakis will be premiered.

The Lessing Museum will also be presenting new acquisitions from the past 15 years in a special exhibition. The opening of this exhibition will take place on 5 March.
