Dance together

At a glance

Whether urban dance, K-pop, breaking, hip-hop, salsa or folk dance, it plays an important role in the lives of many people. In clubs and associations, people dance in pairs or in groups for the fun of doing it together, out of enthusiasm for the energy inherent in dance or for physical and mental well-being. With the "Dance Together" festival, HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts celebrates dance and invites people to dance together from 1 - 11 May 2024.

The festival starts on 1 May with the Dance Festival "Dance into May" in the streets and squares of Gartenstadt Hellerau. Dance groups and clubs of various styles such as K-pop, salsa, urban dance, pole dance and roller skating will be performing their short dance routines. In the evening, the dance festival will move to the Festspielhaus Hellerau, where everyone will dance together on the forecourt and in the Festspielhaus. "Tanz in den Mai" is conceived and curated by the go plastic company in cooperation with various Dresden artists, dance communities, associations and clubs.

Three national and international productions each explore different dance practices in their own way: in the energetic dance piece "TRIO. For the Beauty of It" by La Fleur von, the power of coupé-décalé meets the queer of voguing
and the mixed culture of Mexican urban dance. The encounter between the three dancers develops into a rousing dance piece in which the audience gets its money's worth (03. & 04.05.).
In"Save the last dance for me", the Italian choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni revives the almost forgotten and very virtuoso Bolognese dance Polka Chinata (03. & 04.05.). In "Dancing Grandmothers", South Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn brings a dancing assembly of all generations to the stage. Asian kitsch explodes in comic sequences, bright colours and garish costumes (10. & 11.05.).
And Swiss choreographer Nicole Seiler invites the audience on a choreographic walk through the garden city of Hellerau in her successful production
"Living-room dancers".
Here, the dancers pursue their passion for dance seemingly unseen in the living rooms of the garden city and are observed by the audience from the street with the help of binoculars and headphones (9 - 11 May).

On 4 May, HELLERAU kicks off this year's garden season with a garden festival. From 13:00
a colourful programme of dance workshops, concerts and performances is on the agenda.
At 15:30, Jordi Galí presents his unusual project "BABEL". In this performance
25 people build a
12 metre high tower made of wood, ropes and winches on the forecourt in front of the Festspielhaus under the eyes of the audience. The participants try out navigating together in a three-day workshop beforehand (4 May).

Numerous dance workshops with La Fleur, Alessandro Sciarroni, Sebastian Weber and the go plastic
company as well as a cookery workshop with Eun-Me Ahn invite you to take part.
