Photo exhibition "Leipzig 1972"

At a glance

The Grassi Museum has had a new exhibition space since the beginning of 2025. On August 9, 2025, the almost five-metre-high, walk-on staircase sculpture OFFENE STADT by Leipzig artist Thomas Moecker will be inaugurated in the so-called GRASSI Himmel. Guests will be able to climb directly to the roof of the museum and look out over Johannisplatz towards Leipzig city center.
In addition, the exhibition LEIPZIG 1972 with photographs by Ute Eskildsen and Timm Rautert will open on August 9, 2025, also in GRASSI Himmel. The staircase sculpture and photo exhibition are accessible free of charge and can be visited during the museum's opening hours.

With the presentation of the photo series LEIPZIG 1972 by Ute Eskildsen and Timm Rautert, the second photo exhibition in GRASSI Himmel will start on August 9, 2025. Around 50 works by the photographer duo will be on display until November 30, 2025. Ute Eskildsen and Timm Rautert roamed the city of Leipzig with their cameras during a visit to relatives in 1972. Everyday situations of the people in their surroundings were the focus of their quiet black and white photographs. At the time, they had resolved to photograph the city and, if possible, to publish the series as an exhibition and book. It has taken over fifty years to achieve this.
Now there is also a publication to accompany the exhibition, published by Steidl Verlag and available in the museum store.
Admission to the exhibition in GRASSI Himmel is free of charge.
